Easy Paint Pouring Tutorial with Acrylic Paint

The most challenging part of this paint pouring tutorial is picking out the colors you want to use! If you opt for one of the 10 packs, the colors all coordinate for easy pairing, but you can absolutely choose individual colors outside of the packs as well. Before getting started, make sure to cover your work surface with a disposable plastic tablecloth.

Pour paints directly from the bottles

Pour paints directly from the bottles

In the first part of this paint pouring tutorial, Elowyn experimented with pouring the acrylic paints directly from the bottles onto the canvas.

Tilt and rotate canvas to move paints

Try pouring the colors stacked as shown, then once you have all added to the canvas, begin tilting and rotating the canvas so the paints move.

There will be less color blending with thicker paints

Keep tilting and rotating the canvas to continue moving the paints around. Since they are poured directly from the bottles for this part of the paint pouring tutorial, they’ll be thicker and move slower with less color blending.

Let dry flat after canvas is covered

Once the entire canvas is covered and you’re happy with the look, allow it to dry flat.

Thin paints with water

For this second part of the paint pouring tutorial, choose new paint colors and pour some of each into a separate disposable cup. Add a bit of water to each and mix to thin them out.

Tilt and move canvas to allow paints to move

After you’ve poured each watered-down paint color onto the canvas, tilt and move the canvas to allow the paints to move in different directions. Since the paints are watered down, they’ll blend more with one another than if poured directly from the paint bottles.

Let the canvas dry flat once you like how the paints have moved and blended together.
